Heal Thyself

Mixed Media on Canvas, Series, 2006-2008 

This series consists of three mixed-media works on canvas: Glass, Bra, Purse and Belt Traps, Metaphysical Planes of Life, and My Elements. The works focus on objects that I associate with femininity and womanhood, such as underwear, belt buckles, and memorabilia that women collect.

These objects are depicted as having two aspects. One aspect refers to their feminine assignment, while the other alludes to the phenomena by which the objects/tools we use become “traps” that can inhibit one’s full development and expression. By traps, I mean the potential of becoming bound by these material things, adornments, and customs that focus on outward appearance and not the authentic self. Some days, I relish the privilege of being a woman: shapes, curves, emotions, accessories, etc. On other days, managing all of the details of being a woman feels like a huge chore.

Each work is 31 in. x 60 in. and are composed of a mixture of sewn, collaged, and/or adhered feminine materials and found objects. I began these pieces by either creating a smaller sample or by having an overall concept of the composition, and use of the spatial planes. I strategically focus on the placement of each color, and the size, and texture of each piece of material or object to create a sense of pattern, and rhythm. Through this series, I attempt to preserve memories and time by using recycled objects to create art that incorporates items that once had specific meaning for others and myself. Many of the materials are from my own personal use or purchased from thrift stores. I am fascinated by what people initially become attached to, and how these same “things” are later tossed aside when they are deemed useless or unnecessary. Each of the works, took a year to complete and focus on a specific aspect of the healing power within myself, and to draw attention to the act of creating, as a process of recycling, regenerating, and rebuilding.
