Sculptor’s Draw
Regardless of the medium, my artwork is about my abiding love of color and materiality. I use objects or materials for both their color value or energy and the value inherent or associated with the object or material itself. In these drawings, my interest lies in the spatial relationship between the distribution of color, repetition of geometric forms, and the use of positive and negative space. I believe this combination of elements, specifically the amount of and distance of white space the shape and amount of color creates visual energy.
I have always been fascinated by and felt connected to the artwork of expressionist painter, Alma Thomas. Thomas was known for her bold use of primary colors, geometric forms, and her painterly brush strokes. I can still recall as a young girl, becoming emotionally moved or touched by the vibrancy of her work. This past summer, I decided to focus this energy into creating three groupings of two-dimensional abstract drawings. The majority of the drawings are floating sculptural forms or fabrications.
In the first drawings, I choose to work with the repetition of and or layering of varied sized and colored triangular forms, giving the appearance of sculptural mosaics or stained glasswork. The second grouping focused on the use of varied sized and colored, interconnected curvilinear, biomorphic forms. The final set of renderings, seem to mimic a drapery version of my fabric on wire installations, with the staked layering of tightly grouped bunches of curvilinear forms.
I seek to create interactions between the elements I choose to create with, such that the viewer’s visual sensation, energy, and understanding of the artwork is heightened due to the combination of colors, imagery, and materials. Ultimately, these drawings are about capturing a sense of movement and vibrancy somewhere in between both two and three- dimensional space.
The original artwork is 12 x 18 in. on water color paper and is is available for $800.00. This image is also available as a Giclee (digital) print. For Additional information regarding Giclee (digital) print sizes and pricing please click
